Inspire – High potential and gifted education
Inspire – High potential and gifted education at Vineyard Public School
At Vineyard Public School, we believe all students, regardless of background or personal circumstances, deserve access to learning programs that meet their individual needs and support them in aspiring to and achieving personal excellence.
Our commitment to high expectations for all students includes those who show high potential or gifted abilities. Some students demonstrate abilities beyond what is typical for their age. We recognise that potential exists along a continuum and that different levels of potential require different approaches, adjustments and support over time.
Domains of potential
The domains of potential describe the four broad categories of natural abilities. These definitions apply to all students, including high potential and gifted students.
- Creative domain – refers to natural abilities in imagination, invention and originality.
- Intellectual domain – refers to natural abilities in processing, understanding, reasoning, and the transfer of learning.
- Physical domain – refers to natural abilities in muscular movement and motor control.
- Social-emotional – refers to natural abilities in self-management and relating to and interacting with others.
Potential exists along a continuum, where differing degrees of potential require differing approaches and levels of adjustment and intervention. Students may demonstrate high potential in one or more areas, and these areas often influence one another.
Understanding Levels of High Potential and Giftedness
At Vineyard, we recognise that students may demonstrate different degrees of potential, and learning support is planned accordingly.
High potential students are those whose potential exceeds that of other students of the same age in one or more domains. Their abilities may be above the average range and they may benefit from enriched or extended learning opportunities beyond the typical level provided for their age group.
Gifted students show potential that significantly exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. Research suggests that around 10% of students may be considered gifted. These students often develop skills and understanding more quickly than their peers and may benefit from extended curriculum opportunities and greater challenge.
Highly gifted students demonstrate potential that vastly exceeds that of their age peers, often within the top 1% or less. These students may require more significant curriculum adjustments to support both their learning and wellbeing needs.
How We Support Students at Vineyard
Achieving excellence for high potential and gifted students is supported through high-quality teaching, learning and leadership. Teachers use differentiation to provide appropriate challenge and support, and may offer enrichment or, in some cases, acceleration. Decisions are made carefully and in consultation with families, with strong consideration given to each child’s academic progress, social development and wellbeing.
At Vineyard, students are provided with opportunities to:
• Explore and develop artistic and sporting skills and techniques
• Express ideas, culture and identity through creative work
• Engage in higher-level thinking, creativity and problem-solving
We work in partnership with families and are committed to ensuring equitable access to quality learning opportunities for all students, including students with disability and students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds.
Our goal is to nurture confident, capable learners who feel supported, challenged and proud of their learning journey at Vineyard Public School.
